SOUND HEALING MEDITATION, THE REFORM ATHLETICA WAY

Sound healing for us is a holistic experience that starts the minute you walk into our studio. It employs various frequencies from instruments like singing bowls and gongs to promote relaxation and restore balance. These vibrations interact with the body, aiding stress reduction, emotional release, and mental clarity. Because we believe in the profound potential of sounds and vibrations to set you up for positive transformations, you’ll find every element, from the acoustic design of our space and the instruments we use to the intentional pace of the session, tailored to promote deep relaxation, reduced stress and the gentle release of tension, aches and energetic blocks.

Warm, comfortable clothing and eye covers are recommended.

WHY SOUND MEDITATION

Sound meditation, also known as sound baths, sound medicine or sound therapy, is a healing and wellness practice that’s as old as civilization itself. From the vocal chanting rituals of indigenous tribes and the jaw harps of Tuvan shamans to the drum circles of Native American and African cultures and the singing bowls of Himalayan monks—sound has long been used to calm the mind, reinstate balance and connect with something deeper.

Today, research still shows how sound healing can slow down brain waves, shift consciousness and put your body in a restful, dreamlike state. Its restorative effect has also been linked to improvements in several mental and physical conditions. Vibrations interact with the body, aiding stress reduction, emotional release, and mental clarity. The practice aims to support well-being by inducing deep relaxation and harmony within the body, mind, and spirit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sound meditation (also known as sound healing or a sound bath) is a guided practice where you lie or sit and listen to specific sounds and vibrations (from crystal bowls, gongs, chimes, tuning forks or more) rather than focusing on your breath, a mantra or an image.

The combination of these sound waves and frequencies is intended to be heard, and also physically experienced, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and promoting a profound state of relaxation. This can help lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones and slow the heart rate, creating conditions for the body to rest, recover and support overall well-being.

Unlike silent mindfulness or mantra meditation (where you concentrate on internal breath or thoughts), sound meditation uses the auditory experience itself as the anchor. Other forms of meditation, on the other hand, will be centred around the mental process of letting go of distracting thoughts and quieting your mind.

Another fundamental difference is the physical feeling of the practice. In sound meditation, you will feel the vibrations of the instruments in your body. However, with other types of meditation, the priority is your mental state rather than the physical sensation.

Sound meditation can engage the brain’s natural relaxation response, moving it out of “fight-or-flight” mode (the stress state that keeps your body on high alert) and into “rest-and-digest,” run by the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), where healing and recovery can happen. In this calmer state, heart rate, blood pressure and breathing slow down, and stress hormones can begin to drop.

Research on Tibetan singing bowl meditation has found that a single 60-minute session can reduce tension, anxiety, anger and fatigue, as well as boost overall well-being. A 2020 review of sound therapy also showed that the vibrations and tones can entrain brainwaves, guiding them into slower alpha and theta patterns associated with calm, meditative focus. This shift creates the ideal environment for your body to repair itself, your mind to process emotions more clearly and your mood to get better.
