Frequently Asked Questions

Barre is a low-impact workout inspired by ballet (plus elements of yoga, strength training and Pilates) that focuses on small, pulsing movements. It typically uses a ballet barre (or other sturdy surfaces) for balance while you do high-repetition exercises and isometric holds.

The goal of barre is to fatigue and tone specific muscles (legs, glutes, core, arms) through sustained holds and tiny pulses. Over time, this workout creates long, lean muscle definition without adding bulk. Barre also improves flexibility, posture and body awareness through its focus on correct alignment.

At Reform Athletica, barre exercises are part of our broader 50-minute Sculpt class alongside Pilates and yoga-inspired exercises. Performed entirely on the mat, the class stays low-impact while keeping your body engaged throughout without putting undue pressure on your joints.

Pilates and barre are both low-impact workouts that adopt precise, small movements to fatigue your muscles, but they differ in style and focus.

Pilates (on mat or reformer) typically works larger muscles with controlled, flowing movements and an emphasis on the core. It alternates between larger and smaller muscle groups and stresses correct posture and breathing. In reformer Pilates, you lie down and move against spring resistance, focusing on full-body integration and core stability.

Barre, by contrast, tends to isolate specific muscle groups with many tiny, high-rep movements. It’s generally a higher-intensity, more aerobic full-body workout that challenges your endurance through consistent repetitions and isometric holds.

As for better toning, it all comes down to your fitness goals. While you’ll raise your heart rate and test your cardiovascular fitness as you pulse, hold and burn your way to the finish line in a barre class, you’ll also work that core and those deep stabilising muscles during Pilates.

Our Sculpt & Burn class incorporates exercises from barre and Pilates as well as yoga, all in one high-energy, low-impact session. You can tone and strengthen your body and reap the benefits of both disciplines in a single workout.
